Modern church building architecture design located at the dead-end of a narrow lane in a densely inhabited neighborhood in the western suburb of Tokyo – Japan, Architect Yasumitsu Mastsunaga’s Kugayama Church is a reconstruction of a small dilapidated wooden contemporary church. Outstanding to new drastic and strict changes to church architectural building regulations, the main element part of the innovative church is buried in the basement. The upper floor design gives a space for the pastor and the congregation.

The approaching lane and the stairway leading to the basement are flanked with rich vegetation to obscure disturbance from the outside world. The roving slightly sloping roof and spatial arrangement is fluid and not rigorously enclosed like traditional churches, welcoming guests to the building. Surrounded with adjacent buildings on almost all sides, only one corner of the church is visible at street-level. The chapel and related functions are in the basement and accessed with outdoor exterior stairs. The pastor’s residence is open to a spacious patio mainly used for communal activities. The patio floods and unique furniture design the upper level of the building with light.
